“The woman gazing through the curtain is Annie Hall, an English art student whom Toorop met in Brussels in 1894 and was married to in May 1886. Possibly the picture was painted in 1885, during Toorop’s second trip to England, when he stayed at Lissadell, Kenley, the home of the Hall family in Surrey. The work is one of a number of paintings and watercolours in which Toorop used his future wife – and sometimes her family – as a model.”
